Real Dirt: Bringing "Soil Alive!"

Latest in Soil Science Updates

A few months ago, a long-time friend from Central Oregon reached out…

And now long story short, we are thrilled to have provided technical soil science review and Spanish translation services for the High Desert Museum’s fantastic new exhibit, “Soil Alive!”. This project was a true highlight, demonstrating the vibrant intersection of our core passions: science, education, and art.

A particular silver lining was the chance to include a furloughed USDA soil conservationist in the work. During the federal shutdown, collaborating with such a dedicated expert was a powerful reminder of the incredible talent within our national network.

This project perfectly illustrates how our practice, much like the mycelial networks beneath Central Oregon’s high desert forests, connects resources and people across vast distances and disciplines. We believe in making science accessible and engaging for everyone, which is why supporting artistic and educational initiatives like this is fundamental to who we are.

On a personal note, this project is a fond remembrance of my time in the region. It called me back to my days as President of the Oregon Society of Soil Scientists, working alongside my favorite MLRA soil survey crew and our invaluable USFS and BLM partners. It was a joy to once again celebrate the unique soils and ecosites that make this area so special. 🌋 🌲

“Soil Alive!” runs from October 18, 2025 to March 29, 2026. I’m already planning a long-overdue visit back to Oregon to see it in person, and I hope you get a chance to explore this wonderful celebration of the ground beneath our feet. 🍄 🫶 💌
